Why Omaha?
Omaha is a large city, larger than people outside the area think it is. Currently the 42nd largest city in the United States, the Omaha metropolitan area is home to nearly one million people. We have the same social justice issues as most cities so there is plenty of learning opportunities and places to do advocacy work. For those interested in statewide public policy, Nebraska has a Unicameral legislative body, a unique system to navigate for advocates. We also have great opportunities for arts, restaurants, museums and zoos among other attractions. While you’re in Omaha you here’s some things to know:
- Hillstrom House, the home for volunteers, is a former convent where you will have your own room
- Some placement sites are walking distance from Hillstrom House
- Hillstrom House is a short drive/bus away from downtown Omaha
- You can go “Bobbing” while walking across the Bob Kerry Bridge to Iowa and back on one of the largest pedestrian bridges ever constructed. And it’s free.
- If baseball is your thing, the College World Series is held annually in Omaha and Omaha hosts the Kansas City Royals AAA affiliate, the Omaha Storm Chasers
- For sports fans in general, come check out local professional leagues in hockey, arena football, and soccer.
- The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is ranked one of the world’s best zoos. Come see the baby elephants!
- A five-minute drive can put you in the heart of the city or in a “small town” feel
- Tons of free stuff to do in the city!
- The community is extremely friendly and embraces new volunteers who are new to the city.
- Outstanding night life
- Omaha is also a college town, home to Creighton University and University of Nebraska – Omaha.
- Omaha has unique places of worship for all faiths, including the Tri-Faith Initiative, a campus hosting a Christian church, Islamic Mosque, and Jewish Temple.
